Fox News: Journal News Seeking More Gun Owner Info

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Journal News is seeking more information on gun owners in Westchester County several months after it posted a controversial map on the publication's website that gave the names and addresses of legal gun owners, according to an article on the Fox News website.

The Journal News, owned by Gannett Co. Inc.,, requested information in May via the Freedom of Information Act on gun owners in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties.

New York state passed the SAFE Act shortly after the Journal News posted the map in December, which allows gun permit holders to opt out of being in public records as being a gun owner.

The Journal News sought the names and addresses of all permit holders in the Westchester database, along with other data that pertained to some nearly 10,000 opt-out requests, including reasons for the requests, total number of requests received, and the total number of requests approved, according to the Fox News article.

According to the article, the state approved the Freedom of Information Act request and the newspaper has obtained the information except for the opt-out reasons, which are not kept electronically.
