Horseman Finds Dead Body on North Salem Trails

An unidentified male body was discovered in the woods by a woman on horseback and her guide Sunday around 1:30 p.m. The decomposing body was found along a trail near North Salem’s Gaymark Nature Preserve.

According to Somers State Trooper John Rodriguez, the length of time the body was in the woods has not yet been determined, “but it was probably not for months.” Rodriguez described the body as “a male, possibly of advanced age, with white receding hair. His upper teeth were false and his canine teeth were gold plated.” The cause of death is undetermined at this time.

The body has reportedly been sent to Westchester County Medical Examiner in Valhalla and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

The Gaymark Preserve is part of the North Salem Open Land Foundation. It can be entered from Dingle Ridge Road and boasts woodlands, wetlands, swamps and fields. The Foundation describes it as “a magnificent property.”
