North Salem Lions Golf Outing Honors 9/11 Victim

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – The North Salem Lions Club’s annual golf outing, held in memory of New York City Fire Dept. Lt. Vincent Halloran, attracted more than 80 golfers to the Salem Golf Club on a brisk, sunny afternoon.

“We earned somewhere between $13,000 and $18,000,” said Lions Club president, Robert Loeb. “Most of the money came from hole and cart sponsors, 65 individuals and corporations.”

Halloran, 43, died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He lived in North Salem with his wife and five children.

Loeb has run a golf outing every year since 2002 on behalf of the Halloran Children’s Fund. This year the baton passed to the Lions Club, which continues the tribute. 

Monday's event was a Golf Scramble, meaning each team of four competed against the other teams by hitting to the next hole from the position of its best ball. The ultimate winners were John Vignola, Brian Benko, Frank Lamberti and Nick Morissette.

Among the special features were a silent auction of sports memorabilia and four raffles, including one for a 46-inch Sony TV set, donated by Atlantic Business Products.

At the tenth hole, anyone whose ball landed on the green was automatically entered into a 50/50 raffle sponsored by Arroway Chevrolet. There was a brand new car for the golfer who got a hole-in-one. Alas, no one drove away in the shiny new Chevy.

The highlight at the seventh hole was professional long-driver and trick-shot entertainer Trevor Consavage, sporting his LoudMouth golf pants.

What is the pro’s opinion of North Salem golfers? “They have some interesting swings,” he said. “I almost got hit by four golf balls. This is a dangerous area. I might have to start wearing a helmet.”

Councilman Bruce Buchholtz commended the Lions Club and its “marvelous work. The Lions have been dear to me my whole life. My son, Maurice, goes to the Lions Easter Egg Hunt every year. My father, Maurice, was one of the original founders about 45 years ago.”

Dominick Caleri, a friend of Halloran’s who came from Somers to spend the day, added, “I want to thank the Lions for continuing this in Vinny’s name.”
