NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – There was no estimate Wednesday midday on when electricity might be restored in North Salem. The town advised parents not to let their children go out  trick-or-treating Wednesday night, and school is closed for the rest of the week.

Here’s a roundup of what’s happening post-storm in town Wednesday:

Electricity – NYSEG is assessing the damage in North Salem and has not provided an estimate on the restoration of power. A conference call between NYSEG and town officials took place Wednesday morning. Of the 2,391 NYSEG customers in North Salem, 2,125 remained without power at noon Wednesday.

Shelter – The North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps building at 14 Daniel Road is open as an emergency shelter and will remain so indefinitely. Electricity and charging stations are available at the shelter, but no WiFi. Showers are on offer, and there are a few cots available for people who want to sleep in the building overnight.

Water – Some bottled water is available at the ambulance corps. A water truck is providing water, but residents must bring their own container. A shipment of dry ice is expected to arrive at the ambulance corps about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

School – North Salem schools will be closed for the rest of the week.

Library – The Ruth Keeler Memorial Library is open, running on generator power. It has computers hooked up to the Internet, so users can check their email, but there is no WiFi. Tuesday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
