North Salem's Camp Morty Receives $10K Grant

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Camp Morty, in North Salem’s Mountain Lakes Park, has received a grant of $10,000 from the Hudson Valley Bank. Stephen R. Brown, the bank's president and chief executive officer, presented a check to Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino last week.

“We are proud of our involvement in the communities we serve,” said Brown. “Westchester is our home. We were founded here, our corporate headquarters are here, and we remain highly committed to the people who live and work here. Westchester County Parks are vital to the great quality of life we all enjoy in the county.”

Camp Morty is a sleep-away camp for underprivileged boys and girls, administered by the Westchester County Department of Social Services. It is named in memory of the late Morton Hyman, who served as Westchester County supervisor of camping for nearly 20 years.

Each summer Camp Morty welcomes roughly 300 children and teens to spend a week at Mountain Lakes Park. Counselors help campers understand and appreciate the natural world around them and teach them ways of protecting and preserving the environment. The campers also go canoeing, swimming and hiking and enjoy campfires, sing-alongs and outdoor movies. Six one-week sessions are offered. The first session begins July 8.

“Camp Morty is such a special place for children,” said Astorino. “I thank the Hudson Valley Bank for joining us in sending hundreds of deserving kids to spend time learning outdoor skills, teamwork and just having fun at our beautiful Mountain Lakes Park. This generous gift is greatly appreciated.”

Over the past six years, the Hudson Valley Bank has contributed more than $50,000 to the Friends of the Westchester County Parks.

“Our thanks also go to Liz Bracken-Thompson and the Friends of Parks for putting the partnership together and for the Friends’ continuing support of this wonderful camp program,” Astorino added.

Bracken-Thompson, chair of the Friends’ Board, said, “In many cases, attending Camp Morty is a life-changing experience for these children. We look forward to [providing] another summer of memories that will last a lifetime.”
