“Alexa won more awards at graduation than any other student,” said Michele Leasure, co-president of the chamber and owner of Salem Sports and Spine. “We really picked a winner.”

“She’s all over town,” said Chamber Treasurer Tim Purdy. “She worked at the library for four years. She’s the student representative for Friends of the Library.”

In high school, Salvato wrote for the school newspaper, served as editor of the literary magazine “Impressions,” was co-president of the Drama Club and co-president of the Amnesty International chapter. She also serves on the boards of the Elizabeth Butler Foundation and the Eric Nicoletti Foundation. In her spare time she sang a capella and directed the choir.

“In between, she studied,” said chamber co-president, Christine Renda.

This summer she will continue to work at the library. In addition, she is involved in the Writopia program in Katonah, a creative lab devoted to young writers between the ages of eight and 18.

What motivates a teen to take on so many responsibilities in the community? “I just feel it’s important to do things to help others,” she said. “Not in the college resume sense. But I look for places where my help is needed.

“For example, in the Elizabeth Butler project, Art Against Abuse, I handled the computer issues since I know more about computers than most people.”

In the fall Salvato will head for Ithaca College to study communications and journalism. She has received a full scholarship.
