NORTH SALEM, N.Y. Evelyn L. Mahoney, a former North Salem resident, died June 17 in Carmel, N.Y. She was 89.
Mahoney was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Somers to Frank and Edna Sniffen Totten. She married George C. Mahoney in Somers April 9, 1939. He predeceased her March 14, 1979.
Most recently a resident of Patterson, N.Y., Mahoney was a former president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 672 Ladies Auxiliary in Brewster, N.Y., and the Croton Falls Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Mahoney was an avid reader and card player. She also enjoyed sewing dolls and Halloween costumes.
She is survived by seven children, George Mahoney, of Regan, Tenn., James (Anne) Mahoney, of Kent, N.Y., Diana Mahoney, of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Janet (Harry) English, of Patterson, Kathryn Pilch, of New Windsor, N.Y., Edith (Robert) Simmons, of Pawling, N.Y., and Roxann Merritt, of Wingdale, N.Y.; a sister, Edna Cable, of Brewster; 23 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Violet McCarthy, in 2007.
There will be a funeral service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Beecher Funeral Home in Brewster. Burial will follow at Maple Avenue Cemetery in Patterson. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
