According to a New York State Police report, Paul Hines, 73, of Danbury, was accused of communicating with a 15-year-old in Somers, N.Y., via the Internet and meeting with the child at the minor's residence and engaging in sexual contact.
The police investigated the incident in conjunction with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office.
Hines was charged with third-degree criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. He was arraigned in Somers and held at the Westchester County Jail with no bail.
Hines' wife, Ann Hines, started the Hanohoe Children's Clinic in Danbury in 1974. She retired in 2009 from the clinic, which provided free health care to children without health insurance.
Paul Hines is one of the founders of the Dorothy Day Hospitality House, which provides food and shelter for the homeless in Danbury. He also helps schedule volunteers for the Danbury shelter. He is an organic chemistry professor at WestConn, according to the university's website.
