KATONAH, N.Y. -- The owner of a Katonah consignment business has been sentenced for failure to pay New York State taxes, according to an announcement by Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty.

Barry Shevit, 68, was sentenced to five years probation after previously pleading guilty to one count of repeated failure to file personal returns, a class “E” felony.

The tax fraud came to light during an investigation by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office into the defendant’s consignment business, the acting district attorney said.

The defendant failed to file personal income tax returns for three consecutive years with New York State.

In 2011, there was a tax liability of $10,153. In 2012, there was a tax liability of $3,112 and in 2013, there was a tax liability of $6,281, the acting district attorney said.

The total amount of the unpaid tax liability, including prior tax years, is approximately $28,862. The defendant is required to make complete restitution of the above amount by the end of his probation.

Shevit was arrested on March 20, 2015 by investigators from the New York State Police.
