Wilton Serves Plenty of Ready-to-Eat Meals

WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton Community Emergency Response Team has been hard at work, running the shelter and handing out ready-to-eat meals and water to those in need.

More than 400 ready-to-eat meals have been given out along with 10 pallets of drinking water, said Patrick Russo, a team member. At 24 bottles per case and 72 cases per pallet, that’s more than 17,000 bottles.

“We don’t have a headcount of how many people came,” Russo said. But the state sent 20 pallets of water, and each person that comes can choose two ready meals per person per day. “For most people it's curiosity, but it’s a good thing to have.”

People come to get water and the ready meals throughout the day, Russo said, but most arrive at meal times or at the end of the work day. There is also a station for people to fill up on water, though residents have to bring their own bottles to fill. “We have no means of giving more water bottles,” Russo said.

The setup at the Fire Station will close down when the power comes back on. “The need goes away when the power comes up.” But the ready meals and water will still be available at the back of the fire station in case residents still need them.

“Demand is going to drop off, so until that happens we’ll just set a case out and we’ll have the water hookups here and they can just drive up and get their own,” Russo said.

The center will be open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. until the need has ended.
