NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- The North Salem Central School District will hold a community-wide meeting of the Drug Awareness Task Force on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at North Salem Middle/High School, 230 June Road in North Salem.
Speakers will include the parent of a local child and a Westchester County assistant district attorney to discuss heroin's legal ramifications, among officials.
In a Sept. 25 letter, North Salem Middle/High School Assistant Principal George Bovino explained the reason a task force was created.
"The heroin epidemic has hit our small town of North Salem particularly hard. Over the past couple of months we have had several of our most recent alumni pass away from heroin overdoses."
Eight heroin overdoses have occurred since June 1 in North Salem according to the Volunteer Ambulance Corps, says Bovino.
