Westchester Exceptional Children's School (WECS) is a nonprofit, New York State-approved special education day facility serving students from 36 school districts in nine counties. WECS helps to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of students with autism, communication or behavior disorders through individualized educational programming.

The grant from People’s United Community Foundation will support the school’s life skills program, which helps children accomplish common daily chores and functions. The program’s goal is to increase the independence of participants for successful placement in an integrated community living environment.

“The support from People’s United Community Foundation will make a tremendous difference in the lives of the children we serve all who have severe disabilities,” said Linda Zinn, Director of Westchester Exceptional Children’s School. “We will be able to replace equipment and purchase enough supplies so that each child in our program will be able to benefit from the program, which teaches vital skills for everyday living.”

“The school’s individualized education program is critical in meeting the social, emotional and academic needs of students with a variety of disabilities,” said Karen Galbo, Director of People’s United Community Foundation. “WECS is proving that each child, no matter their disability, is capable of many achievements and successes in life.”

Established in 2007, People’s United Community Foundation was formed to help support programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for citizens in the communities that People’s United Bank serves.
