The stadium was sold out, as the Red Bulls were playing their area rival New York City-FC. The Red Bulls won the game, 2-1.
During halftime, the North Salem U10 team was welcomed onto the Major League Soccer field with much anticipation.
“All of the people in the stands were cheering so loud," said fullback Ryan Vincent. "It was really fun."
The North Salem boys played hard, demonstrated excellent ball control and outmaneuvered their opponents for much of hard-fought, 10-minute game.
In the end, the team was outsized by its Staten Island opponents and eventually fell short 1-0.
“As a coach, I was approached by the Red Bulls with this opportunity to select a team of 16 boys for this half-time exhibition," said coach Richard Randall, who with his fellow coach and wife, Theresa, took the lead organizing the match. "With support of the other coaches and the boys' families, we were able to give our players a chance to see major league soccer from a whole new perspective."
